An instruction video is a great way for companies to reach out to existing or potential customers and demo a product or service first hand ensuring satisfactory results. We were recently asked by Hampshire-based marketing agency LCM to help them by producing an instructional video for their client SonoLab who manufacture instant fit custom moulded earplugs for industry. LCM’s remit included rebranding the company and launching in it multiple languages across a number of international markets.
LCM wanted us to create a short, instructional video covering how to fit and use the ear protectors. This would then be used with different language voice-overs by distributors and customers in the various markets.
LCM supplied us with an initial voice-over script that covered the key steps necessary to custom-mould the plugs to individual users. We then worked with them to refine the script so that it could be used to develop the shot list showing all the relevant steps and also be the final voice-over script in the six languages needed.
LCM wanted the video shot and produced in a style that complemented the branding they were developing for SonoLab, so we came up with a set and shooting techniques to meet those needs. We used a Jimmy Jib and rotating stool set against a white background. Whilst use of green screen would have allowed us to add background images such as settings where the ear protectors would be used, the white style and shooting techniques produce a simple and clean ‘look and feel’ which suits the brand and the healthcare-related nature of the product.
The use of the Jimmy Jib and rotating stool enabled us to show multiple angles of the process and move in easily for close ups without disturbing the installation process. We were also able to capture a series of shots to illustrate specific points in the process.
LCM and the client both attended the shoot so any last minute needs could be handled during the shoot. It allowed them to see the ‘rushes’ so ensuring we had the shots needed without worrying about needing a re-shoot and special edit. It meant we all saved time (and hence budget) during the post-production editing process as edits could be made with the LCM and SonaLab managers both present. We did an initial edit in the studio to ensure the voice-over worked.
We sourced UK-based actors and briefed them on their roles (non-speaking) and hired the voice-over artists for the various languages ((including UK English and American English) using our established network of freelance resources.
In post-production we were able to add suitable still shots and highlight key points in the installation process. We also made some seamless edits to a 3D model of the part of the self-fit process where silicon is injected in the ear moulds to form the custom fit ear buds. The edit saved the client having to budget for a re-shoot to reflect the new branding.
The final video can be seen on the SonoLab language web sites.
