USELESS UNLESS WORN!

The monthly MCA Video News Podcasts are produced, hosted and managed by Focusbiz for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.  The viewing figures are measured and show the podcasts reach a dramatically growing target audience in the maritime community worldwide.

This latest podcast features the tragic experience of Jane Dolby from Essex, a widow who lost her fisherman husband to the sea.  Because he was not wearing a lifejacket, he did not survive.  Furthermore his body was never found, resulting in a terrible legal battle for Jane.

Tom Smith from Fife was wearing his lifejacket and he did survive when his fishing boat sank.  Neil Murray from Looe in Cornwall also lived to tell his story.

But a great many fishermen have been lost at sea – 112 since 2000, and in 2009 alone there have been a further 9 fatalities among fishermen.  Many of these tragedies may have been prevented had they been wearing lifejackets.

It’s essential to get this message across. Gerry Wood, Coastguard Sector Manager, South East Cornwall said: ‘We are not telling fishermen anything that they do not already know.  What we are saying is – if you end up in the water, a lifejacket may give you your best chance of staying alive.’

CASEBOOK: Focus manages rescue footage

Focus is contracted by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency to maintain their very sizeable archive of video footage of incidents attended by their Search and Rescue helicopters.  We also have the job of licensing and making the footage available to news organisations, broadcasters and programme makers around the world.

This rescue story is just the latest example of footage of an incident, which we received from the Portland-based helicopter, edited and uploaded it within minutes to a secure web area for BBC TV Plymouth to use in their nightly news programme ‘Spotlight‘.

The 29 year old man was taken to hospital by the Portland SAR helicopter after being winched to safety from cliffs at Portland in Dorset. It took the Portland Bill cliff rescue team and the Coastguard Rescue helicopter nearly an hour to rescue the man, who sustained serious ankle injuries.  He was found in an awkward location which made the rescue very complicated for the teams involved.

MCA Press Officers provide news releases about incidents, and now regularly use Twitter to alert news providers and other interested organisations.

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency asked Focus to produce a video programme that covered the Agency’s entire UK-wide operation, describing the ways in which their Maritime Response Control Centres handle the coordination of Search and Rescue missions when ships get into trouble.
