We were recently asked to present at the Joint Symposium being held in Montreal, Canada in May 2014.
The symposium was called ‘Social Networks, Social Media and the Economics of Food‘.
The presenters and the audience who attended came from all over the US, Canada and Europe.
We spoke on Social Media Crisis Management and used research results from the recent EU FoodRisC (2010 – 2013) project to highlight the findings and discuss the recommendations we have made as a result.
The symposium had a number of key note presentations including ours and then a series of concurrent sessions where presentations were on a range of topics including Food Safety and Risk, Consumer Adoption, Food Choices, Social and Family Influences on Food Choice, and Obesity.
In our presentation we looked at what practical steps can be taken to reduce the risk and impact of negative social media comments during a food crisis.
We presented an overview of what we call the 5 Ps of Brand Defence
- Participate in social media
- Plan organisational responsibilities
- Pre-audit likely issues
- Prepare responses
