Walport Maritime Films are Europe’s leading supplier of DVD’s and training videos to the global maritime industry.
We have produced for them a number of training video for their ‘off-the-shelf’ DVD’s and training videos and also specially commissioned ones. When producing training videos, it is important to have a clear and effective message. To produce a training video the work we provide usually includes scripting, storyboarding, filming and producing.
For Walport Maritime, most ships crew training is done on-board so the most effective delivery format is via DVD’s rather than online due to the technical issues and costs. On board ship there will be provision for crew training using classroom based training facilities and out and about on the ship where practical exercises and demonstrations can be under taken.
The training DVD and training video can be about correct operational or maintenance procedures and the dangers to be aware of for personal safety and avoiding endangering fellow crew or passengers if applicable.
As many of the crew will not be native English speakers we have to design the training to be visually easy to follow. The scripting and shooting scenes need to reflect this as does the voice-over or on camera dialogue. To further aid understanding we can sub-title the videos in a wide variety of languages.
In this commission Walport asked us to help them explain ECDIS – the Electronic Chart Display and Information System. Within the maritime industry this is seen as the shape of things to come on the bridges of modern commercial ships. Goning are the days of sextants, compasses and chronometers and plotting positions and marking progress on charts. The ‘Paperless Bridge’ is here to stay.
But new technology means new working practices. It also demands that mariners are trained in its use.
ECDIS: A Primer & Reminder is not just for the Officer of the Watch but also for their shore-based colleagues. It’s aimed at those with little knowledge of ECDIS, and those who are about to begin generic or type-specific training. It also serves as a reminder for those that may have been working with ECDIS for some time, but not necessarily correctly or safely.
We worked with Walport to develop the concept, create the script, shoot it, edit it, and deliver it for both PAL and NTSC audiences on DVDs.
Reviews from the maritime industry have been positive as can be seen from the example below:
“…..As with other Walport productions, the film is well-edited with a polished script and a tasteful musical score that doesn’t distract from the narration. What impressed us most was how the Walport team, helped along by ECDIS Ltd, was able to reduce a complex subject matter to the bare essentials. It’s another exemplary job by the UK maritime training film specialist….” (Marine Cafe. com)
