Filed under: Uncategorized — Ned @ 3:15 pm

Project Area: Jinja

Update Period: 4th Quarter, January – March 2010

Statistical Overview of Quarter:

Shallow Hand Dug Wells: 2 wells

Drilled Boreholes: 1 borehole

Rain Water Harvesting Tank (20,000 litres): 1 tank

Home Improvement Campaigns: 2 campaigns

Eco-San Latrines: 2 latrines

Approximate Number of People Benefiting from Programmes:  7,200 people

Programme Activity:

1) Shallow Well Construction: The Jinja office constructed 2 Shallow Hand-Dug Wells (HDWs) during the fourth quarter.  One of these was funded by Ray’s Café, a coffee shop near the Busoga Trust’s Headquarters in Eastcheap in London. The other was funded by Adam Lloyd, a very generous supporter of the Trust. The wells were constructed in Nakivamba and Kiwongero villages in Nakivamba Sub-County, Bugiri District. Bugiri District has a particularly low level of safe water coverage in the Busoga region, and as such we have been focusing much of our recent work constructing HDWs in this particular sub-county. The construction of the two wells has seen approximately 1,600 people gain access to clean water which will considerably reduce the prevalence of water borne diseases amongst the population.  To further limit disease transmission the Jinja office sought to improve sanitation coverage in each partner community as well. Pick axes and shovels were provided to residents to help them dig pit latrines within their homesteads and we hope to see a measurable difference in latrine coverage in the two villages when we carry out of post-intervention assessments at the end of this month.

2) Home Improvement Campaigns: The Jinja office carried out two Home Improvement Campaigns (HICs) in Kaliro District during the fourth quarter. Both campaigns were funded by the Hedley Trust. The two villages which took part in the campaigns, Kitambogo Village in Nawaikoke Sub-County and Kakosi B Village in Namwaiwa Sub-County responded very positively and have made wholesale changes to their household sanitation. Indeed, the work was so successful in Kakosi B that the village has been nominated as the Eastern Region’s nominee in a National Sanitation Competition, having beaten off the competition from villages in 17 other districts! It will now go through to compete head to head with the winners of the North, South and Western regions to decide which village is determined to have the best sanitation in the country. We will be supporting Kakosi B in its bid to take the crown! More general information is available on Home Improvement Campaigns elsewhere on the website. Approximately 3,600 people benefited from these two programmes in the fourth quarter.

3)  Additional Works: The Jinja office has also constructed two EcoSan latrines. One of these (the 5 Stanza) was funded by Amazima Ministries, who work with vulnerable children in Buziika, just outside of Jinja. The other (the 2 Stanza) was constructed for the many volunteers who come out to Uganda to help at Kyabirwa Primary School, also just outside of Jinja. Busoga Trust has previously constructed a 50,000litre Underground Tank and a 5 Stanza EcoSan at the school itself. At the site in Buziika we also provided a 20,000 Litre Ferro-Cement Tank to ensure that the children have a source of safe drinking water. Finally, the Jinja Office constructed a drilled borehole at Irenzi Primary School, in Iganga District. The borehole was the result of the fantastic fundraising efforts of St Luke’s Church in Kew, London. It will be shared by the school and the community. In total, approximately 2,000 people will have benefited from these other projects.
